Wado at the USA KARATE Nationals
Doug Jepperson
Wado was well represented this year at the 2010 USA KARATE Nationals. The Nationals were held in Greenville, South Carolina July 6th through the11th. Estimates place Wado attendance at well over 100. All Wado organizations (Wado Ryu, WIKF, and Wado Kai) were present at this event as well as some independent Wado practitioners.
For the first time Wado had its own men and women adult black belt kata divisions. These divisions were judged by an all Wado referee panel. Jon Groot of Utah won the men's black belt kata championship and Cara Colton of Texas won the women's black belt kata championship.
Mike Vanatta's Tennessee Wado Kai school placed for the first time a young woman named Olivia Bobbitt on the US National Team which will compete at the Junior Pan American Karate Championships in Montreal, Canada. Tom Scott of Brody Burn's WIKF Texas school is also on the US team.

As a Wado enthusiast, I have always been frustrated with the lack of organized Wado information. The Wado practitioners and instructors that I associate with, members of all three Wado groups and some independents, want to know everything that is going on in Wado, regardless of organizational affiliation. We want to know what Wado activities are coming up, seminars that are being taught, and what are the Wado successes in the United States and abroad. We want to support all Wado activities.
This newsletter was developed to help with this issue.  Its mission is to disseminate Wado information to the Wado enthusiast in an unbiased and non political format.
I hope you enjoy this newsletter and encourage you to send in any Wado information you would like placed in it. For a better article presentation, please send in a photo of the instructor or event organizer with your information.
