a monthly newsletter
Welcome to the world of Wado
Dear Wado Enthusiast

This newsletter is to help keep Wado enthusiasts informed of activities in Wado Ryu, Wado Kai, Wado Kokusai, and independent Wado groups in the United States and abroad. Please send your Wado event or activity with a photo of the instructor and/or event organizer by the 20th of the preceeding month to get your information in this newsletter.
We are receiving e-mails on a daily basis. All very positive. We are however running into a problem. Many of these e-mails are not in English.  Getting some of them translated has been difficult. So we apologize to those for our slow response in getting back to you. But please keep contacting us, we really appreciate it.

                             Dear Wado Karateka
Since the last newsletter I have great reports about how many people have read the newsletter and are enjoying the communication.  As some of you have noticed my column has been about the USANKF. Occasionally I will digress on to other topics. But mostly I want to share with you the benefits of belonging to the only karate organization that is a member of the United State Olympic committee.
One of the benefits of this association was that I was able to tour the
Center of Excellence in Park City, Utah. This is one of the premier athlete training facilities in the world. And it may very well be the premier sports training facility.
With its enormous weight racks, custom made exercise equipment, fancy cardio equipment, indoor sprint track, ski treadmill, huge gymnasium and indoor skateboard park, the U.S. Ski Team's new $22.5 million training facility strikes a me as the world's coolest athletic club.

Dick Coe, CEO of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association, said, because it incorporates state-of-the-art advancements in sports science, physiology, recovery, therapy and rehab, the USSA's new "Center of Excellence" is the world's premier Olympic training center catering to winter sport athletes.

I was told I could photograph equipment and exercises but not the athletes, many of whom have sponsorship contracts. Touring the facility I noticed you could see 10 world champions from different sports training at the same time.

This was very motivating for me as a karate teacher, while I cannot duplicate the facility and the incredible equipment; at least I know what areas to train and how to begin.

Helping me understand how athletes can be trained to incredible level were my hosts Troy Flanagan, director of the Center of Excellence and Matt Terwillegar, former US Ski jump coach. Troy has a PhD in exercise physiology and a PhD in Aerospace Engineering. Prior to this job he worked at the Victoria institute of Sport in Australia. He was involved in building the Australian swim program that has been so successful. I was surprised to hear about another area of academics Troy had mastered, Talent Identification.

What does this mean to us reading the Wado Newsletter? This is another resource we intend to share. While karate training is far behind anything like what we saw in Park City. We at least know what the top of the mountain looks like. We know the areas of development and training we have to work on. So we build from this.

I will share each month training tips and information on Elite Athlete

This philosophy has served families well for thousands of generations. It is one that we Wado practitioners should remember.  As a family, we sometimes don't get along with our brothers and sisters. We forget that the family is more important than the issues we have between family members.

The point of this philosophy is not to have conflict with the world but to remember that we need to work together and support each other.  We need to support all Wado events regardless of organizational ties.

Most of us old guys were taught not to associate with any outside groups, Wado or not. This was presented out of the premise of

loyalty.  I wonder if it wasn't really out of insecurity.  But as I have grown in martial arts, I understand there are many paths.  No right or wrong, just different.  In addition, I understand that I will never get it all. I must continue to search for the "true Wado of my understanding", wherever and whatever that is. The path that I am on is different
than others. But I can still learn from others on different paths.

Most of the Wado people I associate with believe this philosophy. We teach this philosophy to our students, we have confidence, an

d our students get it.

So unless your event is only for your group and closed to outside practitioners, send in your information and get it out to the world.  In addition, support other Wado events and encourage your students to do the same.

We can all be on slightly different paths and still work together for a better Wado.

The mission of this newsletter is to disseminate Wado information to the Wado enthusiast in an unbiased and non political format.
I hope you enjoy this newsletter and encourage you to send in any Wado information you would like placed in it. For a better article presentation, please send in a photo of the instructor and/or event organizer with your information.
Also, we welcome any comments or input on this newsletter. Please send your information or comments to rhughes@smacus.com.
