"We are Truly Blessed"

We wanted to get January's newsletter out early to have the opportunity to wish everyone a fantastic holiday season and Happy New Year.

Regardless of where you stand on tradition, sport karate, style, or philosophy we all change people's lives. Very few industries can make such a claim.  Where else can you do what you love and positively affect people? We are truly blessed.

Next year we will continue to expand on martial art history, philosophy, and events. Of course we will continue to bring a little humor, Zen stories, and famous moral quotes.

We encourage you to send in your thoughts, ideas, and philosophies about traditional karate. We are living in dynamic and changing times in the martial arts. The question is where are we going and why?

I want to close with a quote by Viktor E. Frankl, "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom."

See you next year.

Disclaimer: Titles                   bow

One of the most difficult areas that this newsletter has to deal with is the use of instructor titles. We are very sensitive to this issue and do not want to offend or insult anyone. To simplify this daunting problem we will use the following guidelines with the use of instructor titles:

a. The correct title of the instructor(s) must be in the article or seminar information submitted by the author or event organizer.

b. All captions that we place under photos will be:
  1. Japanese instructors: Last name followed by the title Sensei.

  2. Non-Japanese instructors: The title Sensei followed by the last name of the instructor.

c. Any title and name that is placed in this newsletter by newsletter staff will use the title of Sensei.

We consider the title "Sensei" a very prestigious title

Wado Books & Information

Editor's note: There are many Wado practitioners in the world that do not have access to Wado books and literature for one reason or another. In this section we will publish key parts of Wado books and direct the reader to where they can be purchased. We will publish the author's introductions and philosophies but not the technical components of the book. Wado Ryu Karate

We are continuing with another writing from Master Otsuka's book Wado Ryu Karate, published by Masters Publication. This book can be purchased at Amazon.com.

The Ideal and the Reality

by Master Otsuka

It is possible, then, to actualize this "righteous" path of the martial arts?  Due to the never-ending differences in politics, economics and other differences of the human race, this actualization would encounter many difficulties.  Besides, no humans have identical ideals or beliefs.  There will always be differences between a nation and its nationals.  There could be situations where these beliefs disagree with each other and result in an inevitable clash of individuals.

There will always be differences in one's personal history, religion, habits, education and so on.  Can peace and social harmony be maintained with all these differences?  There will always be an inevitable clash of opinions and The Ideal and The Reality

beliefs - always.

Even today, differences exist that separate individuals from each other.  The strong oppress the weak - an undeniable reality and it is very difficult to achieve peace and harmony for everyone.  This is why, since ancient times, there have been stories of messiahs, angels, apocalypses and births of religious sects all over the world.  Those mentioned above are similar to medicines which only provide temporary relief for terminal diseases.

editor's note: Below is a project I think those karate practitioners who have an interest in kata might consider supporting.

                  Zen Stories

Holy Man

Word spread across the countryside about the wise Holy Man who lived in a small house atop the mountain. A man from the village decided to make the long and difficult journey to visit him.

When he arrived at the house, he saw an old servant inside who greeting him at the door.

"I would like to see the wise Holy Man," he said to the servant.

The servant smiled and led him inside. As they walked through the house, the man from the village looked eagerly around the house, anticipating his encounter with the Holy Man.

Before he knew it, he had been led to the back door and escorted outside. He stopped and turned to the servant,

"But I want to see the Holy Man!"

"You already have," said the old man. "Everyone you may meet in life, even if they appear plain and insignificant... see each of them as a wise Holy Man. If you do this, then whatever problem you brought here today will be solved."

We all need a little Zen in our Lives. If you have a story, please send it in.

The Suzuki Cup
January 4, 2014
A premier karate event sanctioned by USA Karate and hosted by the Academy of
Classical Karate has been rescheduled to January 4, 2014.

A great way to kick off the New Year!  The Suzuki Cup has been rescheduled for January 4, 2014, while the young competitors are still on holiday break and can travel easily without missing school.  We have had great support for across the country in our new date and have even RE-OPENED registration at the request of many people so they can compete.  We know this date might not be perfect for everyone and may cause some to need to rearrange their schedules, but we promise we will do our best to make it worth it!  The kumite course with Tom Scott and the Referee Certification Course with Fariba Madani will be held as originally scheduled on Friday, January 3, 2014.

We have worked out a better deal with the Southfork Hotel for those coming in from out of town.  Suzuki Cup discounted room rate of $79 a night including breakfast.  Simply call 972-578-8555 and request the Suzuki Cup rate.  The Southfork Hotel is a nice hotel close to the competition venue.

We were breaking our attendance records and I am confident we will add even more people before registration closes on January 2, 2014, so come and join us at the Suzuki Cup!  What a great way to start 2014, by fighting to be the Champion of the Suzuki Cup!
